Building glass block wall and tying to existing wall

SWMBO wants a section of one of the walls of the new ensuite made out of glass blocks. This will form one side of the shower enclosure. Space is tight so rather than building a frame around the blocks I thought I'd tie the glass blocks to the brick wall on one side and the door frame on the other. The ties they sell for glass block walls in B&Q are about £2 each which seems a bit steep. Is there anything special about these, or could I just use normal ties? Also the instructions say you need to embed reinforcing rods into the mortar every other course of blocks. Is this strictly necessary (the finished wall will be 2000H by 800W)?

Also as the glass block wall will be 800mm wide and the shower enclosure is

760mm, I'll have to drill into the mortar to screw the enclosure to the wall. Will this work? Is glass block mortar hard enough?

Thanks
