Building a soakaway

Can anyone tell me why I cann take an old green plastic waterbutt, perforate it, and bury it into the ground, and use it as a soakaway?

If it's well away from any building and the holes don't become clogged, it should be ok. I've seen some standard tables somewhere for calculating soakaway sizes based on roof area.

Because it does not cover enough ground area to deal with the water, thus making you a soggy patch. You need to match the ammount of water to the soil type, to the land area required for the soakaway.
