Boiler scrappage or replacement schemes

Are there any boiler scrappage or replacement schemes active at present, or grants available for low-income households? You occasionally get British Gas marketing scrappage schemes, but it's just that: marketing...

You had to have a *really* crappy boiler to qualify for the scrappy scheme. IIRC it had to be in the worst band listed by SEBUK.

I think there is still something along the lines of Warm Front, yes, ECO (Energy Company Obligation) but they really want people to get a "Green Deal".

Dig about on the Energy Savings Trust website.

There's the Green Deal which is basically a loan scheme and all I would say is look carefully at the pay-back timescale.

There is the Affordable Warmth Scheme - or the ECO Boiler Scheme, with grants for free boiler installation for people on certain benefits etc. (AIUI, you apply, someone froma company comes round and has a look, if you are eligle they install the boiler and get paid by the scheme)

I couldn't find info on it on the EST website or any central site for it, search for the above and you find lots of sites that you can apply through. Presumably these websites direct the application to particular companies.

this is an example:

And the interest rate on the loan and do you trust the savings

*estimate* to actually appear in reality. If it doesn't then tough.

May depend on which country you are in - Scotland is often different.

According to the MSE website you dont have to take out a loan, you can pay upfront and until March 14 take advantage of the green deal cash back

The Government is keen to make the Green Deal popular, so has put £125 million into cashback for first adopters (the cashback scheme's due to end in March 2014). If you go quick (and do it right), you're be a lot better off. So hoorah!

Examples of cashback on offer

Improvement Cashback Loft insulation £100 Cavity wall insulation £250 Solid wall insulation £650 Draught-proofing £50 Boiler upgrade £270 Double glazing £320 Heating controls £70

These are rates for England and Wales. They're guaranteed for the first £40m of cashback, but the rest of the promised £125m could be at lower rates.

Importantly, the cashback's available even if you don't take a Green Deal loan - but you do need to get a Green Deal assessment and agree a quote for the work through a Green Deal provider, even if you're paying upfront.

Perhaps I'm cynical but won't a quote from a Green Deal provider for a new boiler likely be at least £270 more than that from a normal gas installer / plumber?

You may be right - I don't know what % of installer/plumbers are signed up to be green deal installers, is there much competition or is each geographical area an effective monopoly.

Can you get a "green deal installer" quote before you have paid for an assessment? If so there is nothing to lose by getting quotes from both sides of the fence. (particularly if you already have a very old boiler and know what the outcome of the assessment would be)

Is that taxpayers money or have they just told the energy companies to apply another stealth tax on other customers to pay for it?

Don't forget all those "free" low energy light bulbs probably cost you £100 on your fuel bills.

Well publicised again ...

windwos that need replacing.

"agree a quote for the work", interesting that implies you don't

*have* to use a Green Deal provider just get a quote from one. It's being forced to use a given installer that I don't like, far to many horror stories from the Warm Front days.

We'll need a Green Deal assesment to get the RHI payments on the solar thermal installed nearly two years ago when the RHI was only months away...
