BNP eyes 'seismic' breakthrough

The British National Party believes it is poised to make a "game- changing" breakthrough by winning its first European Parliament seat.

Spokesman Simon Darby said the BNP would overcome establishment hostility and win widespread public support.

Mr Darby added: "If we manage to break through, the implications are absolutely seismic."

The BNP opposes the European Union and immigration and proposes payments for "voluntary repatriation".

Mr Darby said he believed opinion polls were over-stating support for the UK Independence Party which would instead go to the BNP on election day.

He said his party was in the best position to benefit from public anger at MPs' expenses system.

The BNP was on course to win a seat in the North West, he said, and attract up to 12% of the vote in some regions.

Mr Darby said BNP candidates attracted unparalleled hostility from the media, campaigners, celebrities and other political parties - who accuse it of being racist and divisive - but said the election of a BNP MEP would "change the rules of the game".

He added: "If we win, it's uncharted territory".
