Bleeding radiators

Of course, but a non-return valve ought to be sufficient (as for the outside tap). I'm not questioning the need for two valves either. I'm just agreeing with the plumber that disconnecting the thing invites other problems for the customer.

My German boiler (on the top floor) has the filling loop (with pressure gauge) on the ground floor (with water meter, electric meter, consumer unit).

My English boiler is now in the bathroom (on the first floor), but the filling loop is behind the washing machine in the kitchen. (We moved the boiler when we moved in).

I'm sure you've seen weirder arrangements ...

Yes but we can do better. Whilst I think you *can* get filling kits for many makes of boiler these are rarely adding.

The over whelming chance is that if the system does not use an external (to the boiler) filling loop then it'll be a W-B or a Vaillant. Even then some of their models eg.Latest W-B combis and 'pro' (= downgraded) versions of the Vaillant.

Most filling loops of late tend to have a valve at the mains end and a double check valve at the heating end.

If you find that when repressurizing the gauge goes up very quickly (less than 2 or 3 seconds, especially once it's over 1 bar) this is a tell-tale sign the expansion vessel is empty on the dry side and/or has failed.

It is very rare indeed that one comes across an installation where the loop has been diconnected. Agreed it is a stupid rule other than it has made th e component very recognizable which redeems it a lot. There several good re asons for not disconnecting, the only good one for disconnecting is that if the inlet valve is letting by it willshow out as a nuissance which is much better than over filling the system.
