Bizarre Freeview set top box behaviour

My set top box has thrown a very strange wobbly. It works fine if I watch most of the 120 or so channels but if I put it onto any BBC programme it locks up and after 20 seconds or so it reboots. That means BBC1, BBC2 and even the channel 130 BBC news 24 programme. I'm baffled.

You might try a supply disconnection for a minute or so.

There is an active Topfield forum.

Worth trying a retune?

Something like this has happened before with certain multiplexes where they broadcast something within the spec but not catered for by some older chipsets. Is it a very old box? Retuning is worth a try.

ISTR it was about the time they enabled THDTV signals.

My main gripe is that some put first signal found in the primary slot which means in Manchester that the Welsh programs appear in prime position unless you unplug the aerial for the low channels.

Later ones will sort for best signal or by region code.

Did he say that it's a Topfield?

Don't most also have a manual tuning option, so that you can specify which Muxes to scan?

No.

I had that: main transmitter was Winter Hill but the box also picked up the Welsh transmissions from the local Storeton repeater. Solution was to put 12dB attenuator in the aerial droplead which effectively filtered out the signals from the lower-powered Storeton repeater.

An alternative is to google to find the channel allocations then retune manually.
