BG Appliance Check

Had a call from British Gas last week asking if I wanted a yearly gas appliance check. Normally its about £80 but as I have a yearly service for the boiler, they would reduce it to £50. This is a one-off payment. The only appliance I have is a 4-ring hob, what would they test? You can only see 4 knobs and 4 burners.

Fankly if the hob flames look normal, the control work and there's no smell of gas leave well alonr. For £50 most local fitters would issue you with a Landlords' safety record (if it's OK) and they would test the whole installation.

The things to check fal into two main areas.

1) Things which should have been done rigth but were/weren't at the time of installation. (Room size, ventilation, clearances, pipework).

2) Things which might have subsequently gone wrong: Controls, ignition, burners, gas pressure to the burners (often hard to measure on a hob).

I am afraid you are being ripped off all round. The annual maintenance contracts are poor value for money. If anything of note goes wrong, they won't fix it but will offer you a discount from an inflated price for a replacement.

There is no point in paying them more money for doing nothing to a hob.

It was here when I moved in. Without dismantling it and the electric oven below, it would be difficult to check whether it was installed correctly. But after three years, I've had no problems, so will leave well alone.

BG now being nothing more than any other private concern..

Who are unreasonably trading on the FUD factor of their state owned heritage where people feel that dealing with "the gas board" gives them a misplaced sense of security.

Well I'm another mug who has a BG contract. I must admit that we had recourse to call them for a boiler problem (wouldn't stay alight) and a leaking hot water cylinder. The boiler just needed a thermocouple, the HW cylinder was replaced. I could've done them both myself, but BG were certainly quicker (still finishing my little bathroom since starting it in Easter).

Same here, but probably not the same Easter ;-)

BG also doorstep aggressively and more often than the TV licence people.

Which is some brief moment of joy in the day, sending them away with a flea in their ear and the words "You want 68 quid for installing a filling loop!"
