Asphalting Cellar Floor

Had someone from a tanking specialist come round to advise on my cellar.

He was a reasonable chap, and said the 2 options were as follows:

  1. If the intention was to make the cellar more storage friendly by reducing dampness in the air, then the best approach was to asphalt the floor over the wet stone flags since most of the moisture was due to water evaporating off the flags. He reckoned this would give immediate benefit.

  1. If the intention was to convert it into a real living space then the full-on drained cavity membrane system would be required - cost around

10k (it's a big cellar).

Any thoughts?

Until this water moves up the walls and appears in your house proper. You need an alternative method of actually removing the water, leaving it there is asking for it to build up and eventually give trouble.

So you reckon the second option then?

The house is an end terrace Victorian, so wouldn't you expect to be more exposed to this type of problem?
