Arcosan

Anyone know where I can buy this in the UK? (It's a carpet treatment (benzyl benzoate) that kills dust mites.) Much Googling has yielded little information.

(All comments about taking the carpet up will be ignored.)

Can't help with a supplier, but IIRC it was sold by Bissel as Acarosan... just looked and it seems to have disappeared from the UK site. Is still on the US site though.

Wonder if it's a commercial or regulatory reason?

I've never heard of 'Arcosan' but I buy benzyl benzoate to treat our hen's legs for scaly leg from the local chemist. The pharmacist was interested, she asked if someone in the family had scabies ... that's its primary use these days she said.

Ooh, thank you. I shall ask in Boots tomorrow.

I found somewhere that sells benzyl benzoate solution but at £17 for a litre of 0.5% w/v, they can go whistle.

And bloody John Lewis have stopped doing anti-allergy quilt covers, too.

What's "scaly leg" ? A mite infestation ?

Having been told that it is the standard treatment for scabies, I've since discovered that you can buy it all over the bleeding place. Serves me right for searching for a trade name rather than the active ingredient.

Yes. Hens have scales on their legs and feet, nice, neat, closely overlapping ones which give a smooth finish.

There is a mite which can live under the scales, the scales are pushed up so give protrusions which look a bit like mini-cauliflowers and seem to irritate the hens, who can't do anything about them. If not treated they can get huge and cause infection.

Some poultry keepers smear petroleum jelly on the legs to prevent the parasites from gaining access or, possibly, breathing if they're already there. Benzyl benzoate, painted on the legs, kills the parasites effectively but isn't a permanent solution. A careful watch is needed - as for all stock for various conditions.

Bah. Nasty little half-evolved dinosaurs that they are. I've never trusted them.

Oh, you ARE standing up ...

That's why you don't eat the feet. ;-)

But some do! My ex's landlady during university years would often have a freezer full of the d@mned things. She was Malay, or Thai or some such...

Well, student landladys often have to scratch around for a living.
