Have you, by chance, updated Kaspersky...?

I did, and got the same problem.

Settings -> Network -> Monitor selected ports only and click on *Select*

Scroll to find NNTP 119 -> right click and Disable.

Yes after clean install of W7 installed Kasperky .... Applied your 'fix' and it worked ..... Thnaks mate good call.

Also thanks to others that pointed me to alternative servers - I'll use aioe in future

Is the session then "locked up" or can you issue further commands? (e.g. the mode reader command again, or "QUIT")

It sounds like we have eliminated TB and any other client software from the enquiry then.

The fact that you have tried more than one news server also pretty much eliminates that as well.

So we are left with something actually blocking the traffic. Its not a simple port blocking firewall obviously since you can get some way into the process. So it sounds like some form of deep inspection type of block or statefull firewall. What we don't at this stage know is whether its on your machine, in your router, or something on the ISP side of things.

Have you got another machine you could try to access usenet from (even a mobile phone - or something that could telnet etc?

I would next download a copy of wireshark portable (or the non portable version if you don't mine installing it), and run that. Start wireshark capturing from the main ethernet interface, and repeat the same experiment. Stop wireshark and then type NNTP into its filter box so that all you see is the NNTP traffic.

Ah, ok should have read that before my last post... on the bright side I was right, it was a firewall type issue ;-)

Checked with Kaspersky ... seems this is a known issue ...:

"Bug 984993:Support: Connection issues with NNTP protocol (Usenet, port

119)"

I searched Kaspersky but hadn't seen that so I raised a ticket with them on 14 October with a detailed description of the problem and a system state report. I am still waiting for anything other than the usual automated acknowledgement of my contact.

Disappointing.

I've found one thread and posted in it. The response from a 'Senior Technical Support Engineer' is that my ticket is in 'the European queue' and I need to wait for them to respond! In the same thread he says that the bug 'makes your system more vulnerable'...

Not a good response all round.
