There's nothing wrong with off-topic posts but as a courtesy they should be marked OT. Flooding a group with off-topic posts without making much in the way of on-topic content is also discourteous IMO but on the other hand off-topic discussion can also help to keep a group alive.

What isn't okay is when people post test messages to a non-test newsgroup. I also think it makes the guilty parties look very foolish.

Attitudes. I don't care about that in political groups because I have interest in that, but here? I don't know.

Yes it can't be as good as here. Here you get some people posting such fascinating political articles as:

I can honestly say that I have never seen females discriminated against in this group just for being female. There can be mickey taking, the language can be robust, fools are not always suffered gladly but pure discrimination? No.

I'm a really stupid woman and being the ugliest in my family, I have to wear a bag over my head because I frighten dogs.

In uk.legal, I have seen Ophelia's gender being used against her.

I don't know how to attract more women into the group. I've tried looking at groups specifically for women, but none seem suitable, so it's not worth asking them to join, unless you have any ideas.

We've had a few female subject matter experts here that I can recall. KKKatie - there was nothing she didn't know about sewers and related regs. I forget her name, but there was a lime plaster expert here too, who did elaborate restorations and new work. Also, another one (name forgotten) expert on bee keeping.

Sadly, haven't seen these for a while now.

That is very cheering to hear, Graeme, thank you:) Mickey taking? I laugh ;-) Discrimination? Shrug ... but constant bitching? That is another matter although I have to say, the really annoying ones go into my kf anyway. Thing is, in a new group one doesn't know anyone and if enough won't respond to anything posted ... You do realise I am referring to the new group they are resurrecting? I have been invited so I am thinking about it.

I just realised I am probably responding to you via uk.d-i-y :)

You are right of course, but it is by the usual cabal so is not important:)

Me?? I have told you what I have seen in women's groups. Sorry Bod old chap, but you are on your own with this one:))) Good luck though:)

Err maybe 'Judith' can help ... He likes to play the female, so who knows:))

It might help if you have defined a subject for discussion. Just chit chat about nothing in particular can soon pall.

Yes :-) That is the group to which I was referring. I don't 'do' uk.legal, preferring the moderated version.

For anyone requiring general wibble, there is always The Shed, still going strong.

"Judith"[1] in particular uses misogyny in his[1] hitherto relentless attacks on her.

[1] only an internet sock-name; sometimes he is James Michael Schmitt, sometimes Walter Smith; and so on.
