A bit OT...

I know it's a bit OT but I'm leaving BT/Yahoo Broadband to join Talk/Talk.. only problem is they don't appear to have any newsgroup server. I only really look at uk.diy so it seems petty not to move for this reason. I'm sure other people here have the same problem. Are there any alternative newsgroup servers I can use?

I'm appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thanks

Brad

I use news.sunsite.dk as my corporate server has low retention. Text only I think, but its free and does the job. This was posted through it.

A read only one I have also used from time to time is freetext.usenetserver.com.

You can also use google groups if browser based access is your cup of tea.

There are various paid for services for full NG access I have no direct experience here (just google for them), I think they are a few $ per month, but these do not sound worth it for this NG only.

I'm also looking to move away from BT/Openworld as their news service is faulty and they are not able to fix it (Openworld people know it doesn't work properly, but the news service is run by some other part of BT that won't acknowledge/fix the faults). Openworld told me they were looking into having their news servers provided by someone else, but nothing seems to have happened and I'm probably going to give up waiting. Currently considering Demon (who I still have a dial-up account with, and who did have an excellent news service when I used to use them regularly), or Andrews and Arnold which some colleagues have recommended to me as a particularly good broadband ISP for people with detailed TCP/IP knowledge who don't expect support calls to be answered with questions about what version of Windows you are running, but I haven't hear any comments about their news service yet.

You might also consider Pipex. They are not operating system dependant - although do have sort of plug and play for Windose users. Others can manually configure if they need to.

Their news service is fine.

It's worth spending the ?10 with news.individual.net

This is run by the University of Berlin and this is to fund their costs in doing so.

I have a local news server (DNEWS) which sucks articles from this source and a few others, based on groups to which people on my network subscribe.

It provides quite detailed stats of its behaviour in connecting and grabbing articles. I have seen only one occasion for a couple of hours in the last two years when their servers have not been up.

Make sure you have some backup mail service. TalkTalk use an upstream that is widely blocked for allowing and indeed allegedly supporting spammers. When I emailed TalkTalk about this, their response was to block me. Make of that what you will, but evidence can be seen via

and news.admin.net-abuse.sightings.

A&A (AAISP) use Gradwell for their news server. I understand it's fine, but I was already using individual.net and I haven't changed over.

I echo the praise of A&A; been with them for three years and very pleased. Their mail service is fine, but I now run my own mail server anyway. They are happy for you to run any kind of server (I run DNS too) and don't block or throttle anything. They also provide secondary MX and DNS if required.

Clara.net have Clara Mail And News package for £10 a year. A bit more expensive than the ?10 a year of individual.net, but Clara's also gives you mail (including basic webmail) independent of your ISP.

I've been researching switching broadband providers at the moment to see where I can get the best deal - I'd recommend that if you are switching, Madasafish has a good deal on at the moment where you get 4 months free if you migrate to them. There cheapest broadband packages start at £17.99 but if you factor in the free four months - that is really only £11.99 a month. They also have newsgroups.

hope that is helpful. Good luck!
