And for a lot less than the £19.99 for 24 that the link offers.

Still, since they use somewhere around £10 - £15 /each/ over a bulb's expected lifetime, what they cost to buy is pretty irrelevant really.

Then do not use them if you do not like them.
Stick with your energy saving cfls if you like that sort or thing.
But when EU Law comes into action for lighting
it seems that the nanny state will win
I will buy a 4.2 V8 engine car to replace a nice 1.6i small car as my protest on the the day that the nanny law is applied so that I remain carbon equal.

Yup. Package of four incandescent bulbs (40, 60 or 100 watt) here still around $1.00 Canadian. With the 13% Federal/provincial sales tax added and even if priced at say $1.09 then $1.09 x 1.13 =3D $1.23 (for four bulbs) or just about 31 cents per bulb. And they do last. For example we have a row of six 40 watters (total
240 watts) above our bathroom vanity mirror. Noticed that when replacing one a a couple of months ago we had previously replaced one of the six in October 2007. Of course they waste heat; but since we are electrically heated and most months of the year (all but say two) require some heating, especially at night when the lights tend be needed it just means that the 500 watt bathroom electric baseboard heater doesn't cut in as often! If we lay in a stock at a cost of say $50 (less than 25 quid? we should be good for the next few years. And n maybe good LEDs will be around then; at reasonable cost? Where we have occasionally used CFLs is when leaving lamps switched on while away or on timers. BTW we installed four (four tubes each, total 16 tubes) fluorescent four foot fixtures in relative's garage. He also screwed in two largish CFLs which give a brilliant light also. Total effect is a rather harsh white light but OK for auto repair or home workshop.- Vote on answer

ARWadsworth coughed up some electrons that declared:
I'm going to burn an environmentalist. That should be carbon neutral technically.

Now that is good thinking! Perhaps we could get a national newspaper to promote the idea?

Its not at all irrelevant. Especially as one is probably buying in bulk to safeguard future suppliers.
