So, the question really is, can you build something that you really want cheaper than you can buy it already made. this has been the issue for constructing for some years now. However I'd suggest that it might be a nice little project for some pi owners to design devices for people who. Cant use keyboards Cannot use off the shelf gadgets, like blind people etc.

I wonder if you could code up a single station digital tv signal creation system. One could then just need the guts of a transmitter and do digital tv in a gap in the spectrum. Brian

Sadly source not released. It would be a bit awkward to run on a Pi due to lack of documentation of the GPU, but another board might do it.

My thinking is that one cannot buy a fully-programmable device which will monitor temperature in one or more rooms of a house, plus outside temperature, wind, and light levels, make estimates of heat loss based on past figures, also estimate heat flow out of storage heaters, and adjust the storage heater 'on' times to try for a more constant inside temperature. (But I doubt I'll ever get round to building and programming such a thing).
