Tank won't fill

My toilet tank won't fill until I turn off the water supply and turn it back on. After a normal flush, water squirts out of the float and the water level doesn't rise. Turning the water supply off then on makes everything work fine, but I have to do it every time I flush. I have a Kohler Rosario Lite toilet. How do I fix this problem?

Sounds like you have some blockage in your stop valve. First, try removing the water supply tube from the supply valve. Take a shallow drip tray (or a shop towel). Once the supply tube is pulled, open the valve and see if anything washes out. If not, cut the water off to the entire house and remove the packing nut from the handle on your stop valve. Carefully remove the handle and pull the whole damn thing. Clean any debris. Have a helper ease the water back on (just enough to flush out the 1/2 line supplying your toilet. Tell them only partially open...and only for 2-3 seconds. Hold a towel or something to catch the water that is going to spew out. Put it altogether, try it now.

If you still have oddball problems, I would pull the entire ballcock and replace it with a fluidmaster along with replacing the supply tube. That way you can be certain that there are not blockages caught up inside the ballcock.

If none of this works, try the backflushing trick we discussed in another post
