5/8 water meter

Could someone explain what is meant by a 5/8 household water meter? What do they cost and is it ok to use a 1 inch main feed to the house?

A 5/8" meter means that the inside diameter of the waterway through the meter is 5/8". That's standard for a house. The usual pipe coming in is 3/4", so your plan of using a 1" is even better.
