Vinyl Siding installation on furing strips

I have 16" vertical fiber board now with 2" x 3/4" wide ceder boards vertically covering the joints. Can I just nail the the siding to the ceder boards? Present siding is in reasonable shape and tight. I will fir out the window and other openings. Vinyl is .42" lap D4. thanks tom

that method of fastening vinyl to 'furring strips' was/is a recommended method under Canadian Building Standards. Possibly to provide an air space under the siding for better ventilation of moisture that may come through the walls of buildings not equipped with adequate vapour barriers on the inside (warm) side of the walls? However some experience here indicates that high winds can get under the siding and in some case have removed whole sections, tearing it off the furring! Trying to replace and match the right colour of several year old possibly manufacture discontinued siding can be very difficult. Impression now is that is, here anyway, now not favoured. If you have a calm location probably work OK. Of course what global warming is doing to every ones climate is an unknown. You can now swim in the Arctic! Snow in Florida? Great Lakes have dropping water levels, polar ice caps melting, more hurricanes/ tropical storms, rising seawater and higher tides due to more wind etc.?????.
