Split Central A/C Condensers

I've searched quite a bit and can't find any reputable place to price a condenser (outside unit) for my A/C system. I replaced the coil inside about two years ago, but now I'm going to need the condenser.

Does anyone know off hand the average cost of a

2.5 ton unit with a SEER of 10? I'm wanting popular brands like Bryant, Ruud, Carrier, Trane, etc. I know I probably can't but it myself, but I'd like to get an idea of the cost before calling a HVAC company.

It depends if it matches the new indoor coil. They should match. The should usually be the same manufacturer/brand and be certified by ARI to work together. Does the contractor need to replace the pad? the outdoor disconnect.? The refrigerant lines? It also depends on his overhead and the local labor rate. In my area we use heat pumps almost exclusively. 10 SEER hp outdoor unit would be $1000 to $1500 installed depending on the things I mentioned and others as well.

PS, How do you know 2-ton is the right size? Did you do a load calculation? There is a lot involved besides buying the box.

Ebay always has some units listed.

Why would you want to go with a 10 SEER? Is it because that is all that will match up with the coil you installed (2 years ago)?

10 SEER is bottom of the line. Not saying it is BAD, just the lowest on the efficiency scale. Next year it will go to 13.....

Last time I put one in, it was $1650 included install.

How do you know that the poster doesn't live in Maine and only runs his AC about 10 days per year? Good advise on SEER rating can never be given without knowing the user's location and his usage patterns.

I'm moving in a couple of years and don't want to invest a lot into the AC. I have a guy coming tomorrow to see if he can match the coil up with something.

Now I see. No sense of putting in something that is more efficient if you are not going to be there to reap the benefits.....

You know I kid.

I like the new ones but we won't do warranty work on them anymore.

We had a 2 year old unit (not installed by us) and we called York and they made us pay for the compressor up front and they said they would reimburse us after the see the bad compressor. Understandable. We aren't a York distributor. Got the compressor, we made the customer happy, sent the bad compressor back and York took 11 months to pay us back. ELEVEN MONTHS! We will not do that again......

After today, my new "company to hate" is Trane. 10 ton rooftop package unit with the wiring from hell.......
