Same place you go to buy wallpaper, which should NOT be a place like Home Depot or Lowe's, if you want to get advice from someone who knows what they're talking about. The yellow pages will help you find a specialty shop, or paint store that carries wallpaper.

What kind of prep work do your walls need, which you're trying to avoid?

A wall paper liner is what you are thinking about, so figure the cost is hanging a room twice. Liners need fairly good walls so after you figure costs you are usualy the same with a good prep job, a liner won`t hide everything.

Maybe not paper, but 'sizing' works. Makes placement and removal easier, IMO

It's called liner, and comes in different weights for different problems. Just be sure to get the correct paste for a liner (go to a specialty store because the big box stores won't have the correct stuff) or you'll find the whole mess peeling off in a few years. And be careful to stagger seams - you don't want a liner and a wallpaper seam to line up together.
