My shop vac (hoover) did that after 25 years; I just bought new brushes and installed them plus a drop of grease on the hidden bearing and am still using it, noise and all.

i picked a shop-vac with washable filter, wheels, drain cap at bottom for the bigger jobs bigger capacity like playing with the pool cover in spring. get a smaller capacity for the second one you want to carry around for working on toilet tanks and bowls. check the blower features.
at epinions.com a search for shop-vac yielded different model reviews but the available choice off the shelf with any extra attachments is the one for you. http://www.epinions.com/pr-Shop_Vac_AllAround_971-02-00_Wet_Dry_Vacuum
