OT they won't save you money

From the Kid's Page in the newspaper, an article about small dogs.

"... and they won't save you money on food costs because they tend to live longer than larger dogs, experts say."

This is like saying a car with better mileage won't save the owner money on gas if the car also lasts longer.

I think the "experts say" that small dogs live longer, not that they won't save you money on food. But you can't tell which the author of the article means.
