OT, I Got Some Horrible News Today

An old friend and customer of me and my brother is dead along with his elderly mother in a murder suicide. Darn it! It's not the first time an event like that has happened and I always wish I'd known something was so wrong with a friend's life for an intervention but you can never really know what's going on beneath the surface in someone's life. :-(

Gee....If only you had been there. :(

Yah, that is quite common. Taking care of an elderly parent is torture...especially if they are in very poor health.

I lost another friend, a Vietnam veteran who became suicidal after the death of his mother who kept him grounded plus the VA changed his meds. He had always chased his meds with beer and the mixture with the new meds knocked him on his butt which had him finding himself out cold in his car sitting in the middle of an intersection. The DUI arrest was a severe blow that sent him deeper into depression. Another friend kept him from his first suicide attempt but my friend closed the garage and left the car running. We didn't know if he did it on purpose or if he'd simply passed out because of the alcohol and meds mix and became trapped. O_o

Man, that's total tragic. Sorry to hear that.

One of the guys in my last congregation committed suicide. We all knew he was feeling poorly, but no one guessed.

No you can't. Sorry this happened to someone you knew. Most people put up a front that's better then they really are.

Heck, I have to since I live in constant pain. On my worst days I stay away from people so I don't scream obscenities at them. I tell folks if they hear me grunting I'm just practicing my Karate, my deceased friend understood that one. Everyone I work with is disabled in one way or another and living with chronic pain. One friend, LM who owns a metal working shop lost a kidney to cancer and recently had roto-rooter work done on his tailpipe so he had a real problem sitting down for a while but luckily none of the polyps were cancerous. I had a long talk with him about the severe depression chronic pain causes and how to fight it. I told him to get mad but direct his anger at the depression and not other people. In your mind, let it know it's not going to beat you and you will fight it off and you will win. I spoke with him a few days ago and he told me it's working, he even sounded better. I'm convinced that severe depression kills more people than anyone realizes and folks should learn how to defeat it. O_o

An 85-year-old couple, having been married almost 60 years, died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last 10 years, mainly due to the wife's interest in health food and exercise.

When they reached the Pearly Gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and Jacuzzi.

As they "oohed and aahed," the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost.

"It's free," Peter replied, "this is Heaven."

Next they went out back to survey the championship golf course that the home backed up to. They would have golfing privileges every day, and each week the course changed to a new one, representing the great golf courses on Earth. The old man asked, "What are the green fees?"

Peter's reply, "This is Heaven, you play for free."

Next they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisines of the world laid out.

"How much to eat?" asked the old man. "Don't you understand yet? This is Heaven, it's free!" Peter replied with some exasperation.

"Well, where are the low-fat and low-cholesterol tables?" the old man asked timidly.

Peter lectured, "That's the best part -- you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like, and you never get fat or sick. This is Heaven."

With that the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stomping on it, shrieking wildly.

Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong.

The old man looked at his wife and said, "This is all your fault. If it weren't for your bran muffins, I could have been here 10 years ago!"

I'm guessing you're right. Problem is, depressed people don't see that there is anything they can do.

Unfortunate occurrence but all part of getting older. There is help available for everything. You have to often seek it out yourself or have a family member or interested party find it for you.

If you are living in chronic pain you have my sympathies. Nothing is more detrimental to enjoying life then not feeling well day in and day out.
