not spam, no more phone or cable wires!

I've been reading up on the frenzy to pump the internet and HDTV through the power lines. It's already been successfully done in Virginia, and other test areas.

This technology is going to do away with phone lines and cable lines.

Now, are we going to have to slap an anti-trust suit on the power company

AND IT'S ABOUT TIME THE IDIOTS PUSHED THE INTERNET THROUGH THE POWER GRID

what was anyone ever thinking to pay ma bell $100.00 a month for a home and business line... a dedicated fax line etc..

it's crazy!

at last! cheap high speed internet

HO HUM FOR VERIZONS FIBER OPTICS.. verizon has been furiously laying fiber optics across the country... they shoulda saw this technology coming. all that money wasted

internet over the power grid should come in around 2.5 gb per second.

if you can plug in a lamp, you can get high speed internet.

woo hoo

Many (most?) of the technologies for implementing BPL create intolerable interference to existing radio communications services, including even police and other emergency services. And your Internet connection could be wiped out by legal transmissions by existing licensed users.

And do you think your power company will give away this Internet connectivity for free?

In which your personal data gets broadcast over a wide area, not just within a short distance from your existing home WiFi system.

Fiber Optic systems neither create nor are susceptible to RF interference.

Tell the utility companies and the manufacturers of BPL equipment to come back when they've managed to repeal the laws of physics.

cable companies and telephone companies will go away just like payphones are almost extinct

it's just a matter of time

I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE

You say change the laws of physics to make it work?

sure! and men weren't born with clouds between their knees

we won't mean to fly!

power companies will become the one stop source for all communications.

who the hell wants a crusty jittery phone wire vs... always on robust thick internet broadphone

there is no comparison

for the record.. BPL is already perfected, and being used in test areas.

there's supposed to be bugs in a new technology..

geez

its a valid topic and post about another option.

given that it will be priced as high as possible but probably a bit less than current options--

may even decrease current rates for existing services so they remain competive

That in and by itself will take a long, long time.

Testing the perfect? BPL ain't perfect, nor is it widely available.

According to you.

And then you'll never have to worry about making your phone, internet connection, or TV work during a power outage. It just won't.

I live 40 miles from a test city where they tried that with some Beta Testers. It made the local news and everyone got all ready to jump on the band wagon and then, nothing more was ever said about it. No News from the Beta Testers or the power company. Its as if it never happened??????

You would have thought that after all the big hoopla when they started the testing that something would have made the local news Success or Failure.

I assume it was a BIG failure with all the "Mums the Word" going on.

Anyway, It had me excited there for a while. I hope they get this thing working because it is the ONLY hope for people in rural America where Cable and DSL is not available and will not be available in the near future if at all.

... And as recently as June this year the FCC was demanding to know what the utility co. in Manassas, VA was doing to solve the interference problems caused by its BPL system.

i imagine its going to take some doing to get the bugs out

smart people will get it working right, there's too much money to be had to can the idea.

the power company will dominate the communications industry power company stock holders will say... "LETS DEVELOP THIS TECHNOLOGY, let's charge what the market will bare."
