Generally you run the "planks" in the direction of the longest room dimension, not across the short direction. With hardwood (t&g) you can change directions in a doorway or archway without a transition, and even do a "herringbone" angle - which you can NOT do with interlocking laminate or "drop in" or floating manufactured hardwood because the profiles on the sides of the board do not match the profiles on the ends of the boards.
