indoor low voltage lighting

Want to install low voltage lighting in a dinning room ceiling with a remote transformer. Does the low voltage wire need to be in a conduit, if it does, what type of conduit?

Assuming that your in the USA and this is a residence. Most LV systems can be run in romex. The transformer and its connections has to be accessible.

Can the transformer be located in the attic does that classify as accessible?
