Help: Replacing Food Chopper in Whirlpool Dishwasher

(I posted this Friday from my work address, and am reasonably certain it never made it beyond the internal servers; hopefully I'm not multi-posting!)

I had to pull my Kenmore 16032 dishwasher apart last night to try and diagnose a no-spray condition in the top arm. The guts were quite caked with crud, and the check valve seemed OK, so I'm uneasily hopeful that cleaning out the pump area will cure the problem. I tried for two hours to get the food chopper back into position. What's The Secret???? This looks like an insolvable 3D issue, where if the round perforated plate is to slide into its slot, the blade cannot be pulled out enough for the gripping pawls on its axle to clear the shaft of the pump. There's a You Tube video of this repair, but not enough detail to show how the gentleman pulled the shaft out with pliers and easily slipped the unit back into position. No Bloody Way it's that easy! Can anyone shed some advice on this issue? Mother Teresa would have been cursing like a drunken sailor by the end of last evening.
