The "Modern Tool and Die" company is a family owned American business
that's been around since the 30's. Over the years they've acquired a
pile of companies, and built everything from automobile parts to peddle
cars. These days they seem to specialize in consumer grade lawn and
garden equipment. If you really want a consumer grade "Toro", just go to
an MTD dealer.
The low-end Toro riders and walk-behinds are built by MTD, yes. Those
are usually sold at the discount places - Home Depot, Walmart, etc.
Naturally the local dealer isn't going to bother carrying that line
since it would mean competing with the discounters. So he's offering
an alternative brand.
