furnace flame rollout???

hi all, today our gas fired boiler began cycling on & off; went to take a peek between cycles & noticed that the flame on the burners, once they lit were not 'burning' straight up, they did so for a few seconds, then settled back down into the burner box, and the furnace shut off. the furnace has a sticker on it indicating that it has 'flame rollout protection' and i guess this is what is shutting down the system. any ideas on what could be causing this?? it has an automatic damper & i checked it, it was open when the burners tried to light. i wondering if the burner ports or gas inlets into them could be blocked or dirty??? any info appreciated pax, h2

Depending on the particular type which obviously, I have no way to determine, but in large part flame roll out switches are SAFETIES, they typically either require replacement or manual reset and are designed as such to alert the home owner that a SERIOUS problem is present, if it is in fact a flame rollout switch you are having heatXchanger problems, probably needs cleaned, you should call a qualified technician to both verify that is the problem or is not the problem and to correct whatever the problem is, flame roll-out is a serious concern and should be treated as such

thanx for the reply, understand that the rollout switch is a safety feature; my main concern was what was causing it to trip. after closer inspection it appeared as though the unit was not getting any updraft. thought cleaning the unit might help (old Lochinvar with copper fins). pulled it completely apart, cleaned up & down, burners, fins &ct thoroughly and put it back together... ran the thermostat program & it seems to be operating as it was before this started; your suggestion of cleaning seems to have been right on. thanx again
