You describe what sounds like the compressor. If the noise is indeed inside of it, it is very expensive to fix but if the noise is actually from the feet which mount the compressor to the rest of the fridge, it may be as easy as replacing those rubber feet. They would be called motor mount bushings or something like that.

A certain amount of Vibration is normal from the compressor but you should not be able to hear it run. Grab it with your hand and see how that effects the sound. So long as you stay away from the fan and wires it should be safe. This may or may not mean it is about to stop working.

Hi,

Fridge make, model#, approx age?

comming out. Tubing vibrating ( common ), compressor motor mounts have gone hard ( rare ), bad compressor ( very common ), bad fan motor beside the compressor ( if your model has one ), defrost pan rattling ( common ) are some possible trouble makers. If it ends up being the compressor itself, the job is expensive to replace the compressor...usually $350-400.
