Floating/reparing shower pan floor

i am rebuilding a botched shower floor tile installation. i need to refloat the shower pan if necessary but i don't have alot of clearance, especially around the drain. i need to know how thin i can float deck mud/dry mud. Can i go less than a quarter inch?

One thing you might consider if necessary, is to use foam to stabilize the shower pan. Mine shower base is on a cement floor and we pumped about 4 cans of foam underneath it. Came out solid. Floor tile all around it. MLD
