If it is actually drying clothes, but just very slowly it is likely that the exhaust vent and maybe the hose are clogged with lint. Remove the vent cover and clean out the system at that end. You may need to use a vacuum to clean out the hose. If that does not improve the airflow, disconnect the exhaust hose at the machine and see if there is lint trapped near that end.
And you didn't look into it until know? I hear every other day in the news it seams about dryer fires!
Poor air flow through the dryer is the most common cause of poor drying. A plugged, partially plugged or poorly installed (see the following link) dryer vent is the most common cause of that.

The dryer venting will should be checked and/or cleaned *right from the dryer to the outdoors*. Once that has been ruled out as a possible cause, you can move onto other possibilities like a bad blower fan, leaking drum seals, shorted heater element, etc.
