Diverter type (replace three-knob with spout pull./push)

Is it possible to remove the shower diverter knob entirely (the entire valve, not just the chrome).

I want to replace my shower diverter, which is currently the three knob type where you turn the center one to use the shower, with the type that has a pull tab on the faucet. I added the new spout with the pull tab diverter, but now you still have to turn the center knob to use the shower. So I guess I have to remove that entire value somehow. Is there an easy way to do this -- there's no easy access to the back of the fixtures, so I need to do it from the front if possible.

Probably not. The diverter is not a separate part; it's all one casting. You might be able to fabricate some kind of threaded "plug" to replace the diverter stem but it will take some fancy machining. And you'll still have the hole in the tile to deal with.

You could "disable" the diverter by removing the washer(s) from the stem and just leave the knob exposed but not functioning.

Whatever you do, there is a chance that the shower head will drip while running the tub spout. This is because there is no restriction orifice in most 3-handle controls.
