Cleaning gas pipe treads?

I've got to take apart a gas line, union, a T, some stubs etc. What's the best way to clean the threads before re-assembly?
Thanks,

Far better to use a regular pipe tap. Price is not all that different from a internal type wire brush and definitely gets more crud out. Takes up less room in the tool box, lasts years longer.
