Chimney Sweeping Log

I saw an ad for a Chimney Sweeping Log that supposedly cleans cresote from your chimney without touching it. Has anyone tried these? Could it actually work?

Here's the URL for anyone interested in checking it out:

I have never used these, but saw some local news troubleshooter talk about them for a few minutes after testing a couple different ones. He concluded that they don't work very well and that the real way to clean your chimney is to have a chimney sweep do it. I think he also mentioned that if you don't already have a spark arrestor on top of the chimney you could buy one and some chimney sweeps will install it for you.

When my mother-in-law lived with us she insisted I buy one so I would not have to clean the chimney. I bought two. They did nothing.

When you are cleaning your house, do you blow the dust around or do you wipe it down with a cloth?

The chimney sweeping logs don't do squat.

Actually, I've found that by mounting the log to a long pole, climbing on the roof and vigorously scraping the sides of the chimney with it - they do a marvelous job.

You will need about 50 of the logs though, as they tend to fall apart fairly quickly.

Matt, you crack me up.

Thanks for the link, ADC. That's just what I wanted to know. If the CSIA says "fuhgettabowtit," that's good enough for me. I appreciate the input everyone. Thanks much.

Right on their website they state that this product does not take the place of a professional inspection and cleaning.
