box gutter maintenance

I am having my box gutters re-lined using galvanized steel. Contractor One says they do not need to be painted; Contractor Two says they do, using a Rustoleum-type paint, and that they will need to be repainted every 4 or 5 years as regular maintenance. Do box gutters need regular painting?

Also, does the gauge of the steel make much of a difference? Contractor One specifies 24-gauge, Contractor Two does not specify the gauge.

FWIW, I will be getting at least one more quote.

painting is more protection, but not the first year as the gutters, galvanized metal have an oily coating on them and must wear away, then use a primer for galvinized metal, not latex, then paint with oil paint

Try to get quotes on using aluminum and then you won't have the painting problem.
