lawn aerator question

Like most everyone, my lawn has risen, or gained heighth over the years. Rather than strip the grass and lower, it seems to me that I could aerate/plug my lawn every year, and pick up the plugs, and the lawn should slowly go back down....am I correct? do make an aerator that catches the plugs???? thanks in advance for all LOGICAL responses

Never had this problem on any of my lawns. What you're proposing to do makes sense in a theoretical sense. But it would be one hell of a lot of work for any reasonable size lawn. If you have 10,000 sq ft of lawn, you'd have to remove 31 cubic yards of material to lower it an inch. That's a lot of raking, gathering, moving, etc. And a lot of what you're taking away, is grass which takes up space, but isn't going to lower the lawn like taking away pure soil would. So, I'd bet you'd have to take away twice at least twice as much or 62 yards of plugs to lower it an inch.
