when to pick corn

i know it sounds like a simple question, but i have some corn, a first-time batch, and i wonder if the tassels are an indication of when to pick them, as in do i wait until the tassels are brown? pick when tassels are white? when?

thanks for any help.

When the ears fill out and the silks start to turn brown. You can usually just feel the ear and if necessary pull back acorner of the shuck and take a peek. wait till the silk starts to dry tho, opening the shuch just a little bit can let bugs in if it has to stay on the stalk more then a couple more days.

How long does it normally take from the point the tassels display themselves ? Four weeks ?

The tassels will be brown when the ears are ready to be picked, but, just because the tassels are brown doesn`t mean the ears are ready to be picked. I usually feel the ears to see how full they seem. A tight ear usually means it is ready to pick. Of course all of the ears will be in a different stage of ripening. If not sure just peel back a bit of the husk to get a peek at the kernels. After getting the hang of it you will know when to pick them.

Here in our community garden the first person`s corn that is ready to be picked is eaten by the racoons. :( Good Luck......Dan.
