Corn Gluten The Ultimate Weed Killer?

Anyone ever heard of, or tried, this?

I tried corn gluten to keep the weeds down in my asparagus patch. It worked well, but it was very expensive. Preen would have served as well at a fraction of the cost. NB: corn gluten and Preen are pre-emergent weed preventers, not herbicides.
