We really didn't elect him twice. But the momentum has started. Not only do we have to get our civil rights back but we need to stop this horror that we call a "war on terrorism". Now Germany has elected a conservative government as has France. Italy's government has been conservative as is England's. (By conservative, I don't mean in the traditional economic sense, I mean supportive of the plutocrats.) And all the while the people like you and me say our government is wrong. How could it happen? Look at our offering for the 2008 election. They all back the war on terrori$m and that is the financial lynch-pin that will get one of them into office.

Well unforunately the 'war on terrorism' can never really be won. There will always be sick freak culties, and the only thing we seem to be accomplishing is encouraging the conditions that help spawn said sick freak culties. Just my take on it though. I think the 'terrorists' are just sick of all the poverty and such and jealous of our perceived wealth. They just don't seem to understand that, as I said in a different newsgroup, "It doesn't matter where you live, life sucks EVERYWHERE"

Whoa, wait just one minute; I never said life sucks. Life is wonderful provided reality is not distorted to fit the model we are being sold by the establishment. We are so monitored now that even banks must turn over our cancelled checks to the government under the Patriot Act. I have nothing to hide, so I don't really care, but my husband does care. He thinks bushie is the worst president in the history of the world and I agree. A bigger, dumber ahole we couldn't have.

I know, I did :-) Seriously though, my point was more that to just assume some region/country/nation/whatever doesn't have (serious)problems is silly. Yeah a country may look really nice, especially if you are merely a visitor for a week or so, and only see the tourist version, but those who live there know the pros and cons of their area. Those the current administration are calling terrorists, my personal take is that they're jealous of the perceived wealth of this country, only knowing what perks there are, such as the ability to rise in status seemingly without trying, and where poverty isn't as bad as it is where they are. They see the glamour, while us residents know there are perks, but also plenty of pitfalls. It's all a matter of experience/perspective.

I disagree. Terrorists hate American's because we are decadent, slobs who are heathens and have no regard for Islam. The term Gihad is not a term used by the poor to indicate they are jealous.
Are you aware there are teenagers giving oral sex to one another on the school bus these days? If you did that when I was a kid you were tortured for the rest of your life being called BJ. The majority of Americans are Christians, and to radical Islam this is paramount to being godless. The guys who drove jumbo jets into the Twin Towers were not poor. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Either is Bin Laden poor. Rather, he is extremely wealthy.
So, this is how radical Islamists perceive us. I am not indicating this is actually HOW we are, but for the most part we're a pretty silly nation to other nations which has had the same cultural imprints for thousands of years. The U.S. have only existed for hundreds of years; the white folks, American Indians have been here and were murdered along with millions of buffalo. It's hopeless.

Any clue as to why the World Trade Center was attacked twice?
We don't care if we take out a city block of people, if we get the man we suspect.
Timothy McVeigh must be laughing in his grave.
Do you understand that we have been capable, for thirty years, of intercepting phone calls, foreign and domestic?
Who could hide from us?

Nobody supports a war. They supported the president who outright lied to everyone. He had the audacity to make a joke looking under the podium for WMD. It was a joke to him. He had a "who has a bigger pee pee" contest with his father's adversary, Sadam Hussein. Daddy didn't get him, so bushy did.
If people didn't sign off on the war they were lied to about, they'd have been called unpatriotic. That flew around for as long as it could last; later proven to be another myth put out by the bushie administration.
Remember "You're either with us or you're against us" crap? Hmmm, interesting.

Well, okay, now that you mention it! I didn't want a big fat Rush Limbaugh "she's a libruel" bullshit thrown in my face. Gore won in 2000, Bush was appointed both his terms. Cheney makes the law now, apparently, and everyone in the administration ran running in flames from the White House before the shit hit the fan. I forgot to mention that other squirmy, slime, Tom Delay. Blood pressure...rubbing temples...think good thoughts!

Well the obesity statistics for my country are horrendous too. We were 2nd in the world right behind the US but when I checked just now we have dropped back to 6th in the world behind the US.
It would seem that being a nation of fatties doesn't make sense as being a reason why the US is fascinated with big vehicles. We have been almost as fat and didn't feel the need to have big cars to drag our lard arses around. Our cars are bigger than those driven round Europe but way smaller than those favoured by the US and that is despite the fact that our country is the size of the continental US with a population of less than 10% of that of the US, and thus have a limited number of towns at large distances from each other. The wonderful little "Smart" cars so beloved of the Parisians would not be much good here beyond the city limits (but what a great city car!)

Hey! Don't apologise or justify! If you notice something of concern about your country then you are entitled to say it (and I'd also add, that it is your duty, to do so. ""The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance"...John Curran). Your ability to feel able to say it and to expect to be treated with respect for your views is democracy in action.
It gives me the willies when some Americans criticise another American as being "unpatriotic" or "UnAmerican" for daring to be critical of their own country. The same thing applies here too as our idiot pollies have just discovered the "Un" comment and are using it. Thankfully they haven't been silly enough to run the "unpatriotic" line comment.
but when I compare us with other

Well, you do have a point about Bush. He does produce a huge cringe factor every time I see him on TV and I'm eternally grateful that he isn't Head of State or my country. And I used to think that the re-election of Reagan must have been the first and last time such a thing would happen.

Actually, Nixon, Regan, Bush are pretty representative of our leaders. The only exception "may" have been Franklin D. Roosevelt, who seeing that our gun boat diplomacy was over stretched started the "Good Neighbor Policy" but he may have lead us into WWII as well.
The best president we have had in a long time was Carter but he backed the Khmer Rouge's attempt to return to power after they were defeated by the Vietnamese and looked the other way when Indonesia overran Timor and killed 100,000 - 200,000 people. Sigh.
On a lighter note, I started planting the last section of my garden yesterday. More of an experiment, you might say. Not much sun. One corner will support tomatoes and I'll plant some of my excess in the rest just to see what survives and what doesn't.
The warmer days are reflected in the sudden surge in growth of the cucurbits. I was caught somewhat flat footed when I noticed that some of the corn is showing tassels. Any ideas about how to swell those ears up. They look like you could clean your ears with them.
Bees are still with me for the flowering of the cucumbers and melons. Whew!

This might have been debatable until the Bush Gang came along. Nobody can compete with the theologically reactionary, back room, good ol' boy, anti-scientific, anti-civil rights, vicious, bottom of the barrel that is Bush and his Gang. The very avatar of evil.
It would be nice if you could offer some evidence instead of just saying, "I don't like it". Brevity is a virtue but so is comprehensibility.
So how's your garden doing? Anything ripe yet?

Billy, heal thyself. Apply above para to the one above that.

Not yet; but getting close. Just cleaned out all the lettuce, radish, spinach beds and am pondering what to put in them.

Thanks for the reality check oz, I think I answered that in my post to Aluckyguess took care of that but if you need more, how about the arming of Samosa's national guard and calling them the Contras along with the fact that Lieutenant Colonel Ollie North was Regan's "go-fer" and over saw the sales of weapons to Iran (our enemy at the time) and the sales of drugs (Noriega) to finance a shadow government with no accountability to Congress? Man, that Carter is looking really good. He just got screwed over by the Republican left-overs in the CIA.
The lettuce is doing well. I'm getting about five salads a week from the lettuce patch and it isn't completely mature yet, and I have another 36 in the germinator. There is nothing like fresh salad. It has a texture and a flavor and I never tire of eating it.

Off the top of my head double digit inflation and interest rates. A terrible economy. I was young then, I do remember I thought he would of made a great neighbor.

Yes lots of peppers some tomatoes lots of squash beans, lettuce, carrots, onions, swish chard, beets, broccoli, cilantro and Tomatillo's. The tomatillos have made some great salsa.
How is yours doing?
