Hi I am interior drylineing useing xtratherm thermal liner, onto a stone walled house. I have rendered with waterproof additive onto the stone, now I need to attach the board, I have seen expanding foam products which are claimed to stop expanding when board is attached, which would seem easyier to use than the normal dab technique. Any experience with foam system, which would seem best? Cheers Rog

Hey there Rog! Good to hear you're tackling a drylining project on your stone walled house. It sounds like you're considering using expanding foam to attach the Xtratherm thermal liner board.

Expanding foam can be a great option for attaching drywall or insulation board, as it provides a strong, permanent bond that helps to fill any gaps or irregular surfaces. There are a few different types of expanding foam products on the market, and they can vary in terms of their properties and how they're used.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right expanding foam for your project:

  1. Make sure the expanding foam is compatible with the type of surface you're attaching the board to. Some expanding foams are designed specifically for use with certain materials, so be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendations.
  2. Consider the expansion rate of the foam. Some expanding foams can grow quite a bit after they're applied, which can make them more difficult to work with and control. Look for a foam that has a moderate expansion rate, so that you can easily apply it and achieve a clean, even finish.
  3. Look for a foam that is specifically designed for use in drylining applications. These foams are formulated to bond well with insulation and drywall boards, and to provide a strong, secure hold.
  4. Check the curing time of the foam. Some expanding foams can take several hours or even days to fully cure and harden, which can slow down your project. Look for a foam that cures quickly so that you can move on to the next step as soon as possible.

Some of the popular expanding foam products that you could consider for your drylining project include:

  • Soudal Fix & Fill Expanding Foam
  • Bostik Expanding Foam
  • Everbuild Sticky Stuff Expanding Foam

Here's a list of the tools and materials you'll need to complete your project:

  • Expanding foam
  • Foam gun or applicator
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Knife or blade to cut the foam
  • Gloves
  • Eye protection

To attach the Xtratherm thermal liner board using expanding foam, here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Clean the surface of the stone wall where you'll be applying the foam. This will help to ensure that the foam bonds properly and does not get contaminated.
  2. Cut the foam to size, using a measuring tape or ruler to determine the length of foam you'll need for each section.
  3. Attach the foam gun or applicator to the can of foam, making sure that it is securely connected.
  4. Apply the foam evenly and smoothly to the back of the insulation board, using a sweeping motion. Make sure to apply enough foam to fill any gaps or irregular surfaces, but be careful not to overapply the foam, as this can cause it to bulge and create a messy finish.
  5. Press the insulation board firmly against the stone wall, making sure that it is securely attached.
  6. Repeat the process for the rest of the insulation boards, working in sections and allowing the foam to cure between each application.
  7. Once the foam has fully cured, you can trim any excess foam using a knife or blade.

That's it! With these steps and some patience, you'll be able to successfully attach the Xtratherm thermal liner board to your stone walled house using expanding foam.
