DIY superstores

Why are they all such rip-ffs? Homebase is absolutely diabolical. For a lot of things they only seem to stock their own brand goods now, and they're not cheap either!

B&Q has ridiculous prices. The cost of Dremel parts very high.

Because they rarely bother to consider the competitive position.

They get bits and bag them for racks and just think of a price.

A good example is plumbing components. A full price merchant sells for say 69p and that is collected and brought to you by a counter person. In a bag on a rack in B&Q, it may be £3.75.

It's the same as supermarkets. They wipe out the competition with cheap prices then hike them up when they have the virtual monopoly.

Indeed. I really loath supermarkets.

Not as bad as Plumb Center a national chain of so called plumbing specialists. The may have a wider range but you're better off going to Wickes in my experience if you have one and they have the part. A bit cheaper and better service.

I'm definitely converted to plumbers merchants for plumbing parts now. Bought a 'standard' cistern lever from B&Q for £12. Didn't fit, so took it back, couldn't find another that would fit.

Went to the local plumber's merchant. Explained it was for my Ideal Standard cistern. He said he had the part, but said he was sorry, it would be dearer, because Ideal Standard stuff always was. Charged me £8! :o)

Find a good local wholeseller, these are usually better value than the sheds

As a homebase employee, just so you know, if you find ANY comparable product cheaper, and can prove it's cheaper i.e old receipt, advert etc, homebase will match the price, and even refund 10% of the difference. So no matter where you buy your products, we always end up cheaper :)
