If it is the bathroom, rather than the kitchen, could it be hair in the u bend?

Chemicals won't help much, if it is..It may be worth a look.

That's about it. You should be able to get the crap out by removing the bottom half of the trap underneath the basin, or if you're unlucky you may have the older type where you have to unscrew the collars at both ends and take the entire trap off.

Whichever it is, don't forget a bucket, the water that comes out will be dirty and smelly. chuck it down the bog or the drain outdoors.

Easy way Get an hard electric earth wire Open the one end and spread the wires bit. Drop down as much you can into the hole from inside the bath and stir it up quite a bit and pull it out, the hairs and other bits of rubbish will pop out it. Wear a glove and pull out slowly. Repeat it few times and it should clear it. I have kept a piece of hard wire in the bathroom permanently to keep it clean that way. It works fine.

What? Do you mean that you should not tip the contents down the bathroom sink after removal (as someone with the initals ARW once did that)

If you're really quick you can shove the bucket under the open trap and prevent the contents from spilling onto the floor. If you're really quick, that is...

I went one beter than that. Had a blocked U bend. Put a bucket underneath and removed the U bend. water drained into the bucket. Then in a moment of utter madness, emptied the bucket down the sink!
