Air coolers

I have seen air coolers (not air conditioning) for sale in Argos, I have seen a challenge air cooler priced at £49.99, what I would like to know do these really work well, I know they will not be as good as an air-conditioning unit, but are they better than a standard fan.

cheers Keith

Sounds like an evaporative cooler, think wet and smelly, nice if you're into that kind of thing but not for me. I'd prefer an open window and a fan.

Smelly ???????????

We have used one for two or three years and find it very effective and not at all smelly and don't notice any dampness.

I was a frequent visitor to a small computer room shared by 3 guys plus workstations where one of these was in use and the air just didn't feel/smell right (don't think it was BO). As they were evaporative I reckoned that the water was just passing into the air in the (poorly ventilated) room making it damp. Also, tap water does have some bacteria in it so if you are constantly topping up and the water is evaporating off then the bacteria will become more concentrated, possibly breeding and leading to smells. Needless to say, the users complained about the unit but never cleaned it out.

marginally better than just a large fan

A lot better than just a fan. Keep the water tank clean.

Hi, we have one for just over a week now and it works great!! The one I have also has a place to put in ice packs, and it works.
