fastening ceiling joists to top plate

Are ceiling joists typically fastened to the top plate by toe nailing or is there hardware analogous to a joist hanger that can be used?

Many Thanks!

"Typical"? The fact is that we rarely use ceiling joists per se any more. If you have flat ceilings, you are usually dealing with roof trusses or 2nd floor joists. At any rate, if it's part of a roof system, then you should use something like an H1 from Simpson.
