What is the difference between plastic blue kerosene and red gas cans?

Once I stopped at the Wawa gas station in New Jersey and the gas station attendant refused to fill up my plastic blue can with a gas telling me that can should be red and not blue. He said he'll lose his job if he will do this. Is this right to do so?

The attendant's right. Outside of color there's no difference in the cans, they're both #2 plastic. A gas station can only fill "approved" gasoline containers. You could get away with it or any other container in a State that let's you Self-Serve. Paint your can before you go back.
