Knob and tube wiring for a new outlet

I need a new receptacle outlet. I know how to wire it. My problem is finding the hot wire in a home with knob and tube wiring. Since all the wiring is covered with the same insullation it's difficult to tell which is the hot wire. Is there a safe way to find out? Also how can I ground the existing outlets in this house. Is it ok to run a copper wire to the cold water pipe and solder it to the clamp or some other secure method? Are GFCI outlets an option for grounding in this house? Thanks for your replies.
