What would cause our heater to smoke excessively and let off a pungent odor of burning kerosene? This usually happens when we first light it and when the heater has almost ran out of kerosene.

Kerosene smells, no way to avoid it. Excessive smoking is probably due to a need to be disassembled and cleaned.
